Introducing the very unique Matucana madisonorum, native to the Amazonas region of Peru where it grows in dry forests. In its natural habitat it is considered critical endangered due to over collection and agricultural practices.

This deep green cactus with a globular stem subtle, wavy ribs. In the thickest part of ribs there is a areole. A areole is a specialised structure in cacti and succulents from which spines, hair, flowers, etc grow. From these structures small, curved spines emerge that curve back towards the body. These spines first emerge a red-brown coloured cactus and fade to a silver-white. There are very small tuffs of a wooly growth called cephalium grow amongst the spines from the areoles as well which makes the spines really pop.

As this plant matures it will send out offsets, these can be used for propagating to left to for a stunning cluster. In spring and summer Matucana madisonorum produces large, bright red flowers that contrast amazingly against the dark stem of this plant.

☀️This plant requires bright, indirect light but harsh direct sunlight needs to be avoided as this can scorch the leaves.

💧Overwatering can lead to rot, so it's best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

〰️These plants don’t have any special requirements when it comes to humidity. Ambient is perfectly fine for these guys.

🌡️Standard room temperatures between 18-24°C are perfect

🍴Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

✂️A mature plant can be propagated by offsets. Simply remove the offsets, let them callus and then nestle the base into a well draining potting mix. Avoid watering until the plants have put out some roots. Propagation can also be done by seed.

🪴Repot every 2-3 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix formulated for cacti and succulents.

(Each living plant is unique and may vary slightly in size, colour, or shape depending on the season. Flowering plants are sent when available. You will receive a bare rooted plant similar to the ones in the pictures provided.)
