Frailea castenea Is described as a very singular, miniature growing species never growing larger than 4-5cm in diameter. It has a very flatterned, globose body that is often described as disk like. This unique species is found from Southern Brazil to Northen Uruguayan where it grows on the rocky outcrops and in pampa grasslands. In its natural habitat it has major threats from cattle, agricultural practices and collection.
Depending on the growing conditions this cacti can be chocolate-brown, to purple-red or reddish-green in colour. It has between 8-15flat ribs and in-between each rib that are clusters of short, spider-like, black spines. These spines grow backwards almost flat against its body.
Frailea castenea as has a tuberous root system, these roots store enough essential water and minerals so the plant can survive long periods of drought. Tuberous roots also act as an anchor for the plant, there are contractile roots that continually pull the plant deeper into the ground as the stem grows. This helps keep the plant close to the surface of the ground.
☀️This plant requires bright, indirect light but harsh direct sunlight needs to be avoided as this can scorch the leaves.
💧Overwatering can lead to rot, so it's best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
〰️These plants don’t have any special requirements when it comes to humidity. Ambient is perfectly fine for these guys.
🌡️Standard room temperatures between 18-24°C are perfect
🍴Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
✂️Most propagation for this species is done by seed.
🪴Repot every 2-3 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix formulated for cacti and succulents.
(Each living plant is unique and may vary slightly in size, colour, or shape depending on the season. Flowering plants are sent when available. You will receive a bare rooted plant similar to the ones in the pictures provided.)
