Gymnocalycium keislingii v castenea is a stunning species native to Argentina, specifically La Rioja, where it grows in scrubland on hilly terrain. This is a geophytic cactus, meaning it has a swollen underground root system. These plants can vary in colour from a deep green to brownish-green shade with hues of red or violet. It’s described as having a flattened to depressed globose stem with 10 to 15 low rounded ribs. On each rib there are clusters of 5-8 spines emerging from small collections of woolly, fuzzy growth called a cephalium. These spines curve back towards the trunk giving them a flat appearance. Structurally this plant is described as having less prominent “chin humps” compared to other gymnocalycium species. As this plant matures it will produce a number of offsets, these can be used for propagating to left to for a stunning cluster.

☀️This plant requires bright, indirect light but harsh direct sunlight needs to be avoided as this can scorch the leaves.

💧Overwatering can lead to rot, so it's best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

〰️These plants don’t have any special requirements when it comes to humidity. Ambient is perfectly fine for these guys.

🌡️Standard room temperatures between 18-24°C are perfect

🍴Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

✂️A mature plant can be propagated by offsets. Simply remove the offsets or take the cutting of desired length, let them callus and then nestle the base into a well draining potting mix. Avoid watering until the plants have put out some roots. Most propagation for this species is done by seed.

🪴Repot every 2-3 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix formulated for cacti and succulents.

(Each living plant is unique and may vary slightly in size, colour, or shape depending on the season. Flowering plants are sent when available. You will receive a bare rooted plant similar to the ones in the pictures provided.)
