Euphorbia decaryi is a super cool succulent native to Madagascar where it grows in subtropical and  tropical dry forests in shrubland and rocky areas. It is commonly named ‘Dead Plant’ as it can very hard to tell if the plant is dead or alive when stressed.

When the plant looks ‘dead’ the leaves will turn a brown to purple-brown colour and look very dry however, normally the plant is actually perfectly fine and this is very normal. Euphorbia decaryi is a shrub-like, small, leafy succulent that has beautiful, wazy, zig-zag edged leaves. In cooler weather this plant will very small, waxy flowers that come in a variety of colours. Some of these colours include chartreuse, yellow-green, yellow or red.

As this plant matures it will produce a number of basal shoots and begin to branch, these can be used for propagating to left to for a stunning shrub. Being a Euphorbia, this plant has a toxic sap which should be avoided completely by the use of safety gloves and eyewear when dealing with this plant.

☀️This plant requires bright, indirect light but harsh direct sunlight needs to be avoided as this can scorch the leaves.

💧Overwatering can lead to rot, so it's best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

〰️These plants don’t have any special requirements when it comes to humidity. Ambient is perfectly fine for these guys.

🌡️Standard room temperatures between 18-24°C are perfect

🍴Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

✂️A mature plant can be propagated by offsets or stem cuttings. Simply remove the offsets or cutting of desired length, let them callus and then nestle the base into a well draining potting mix. Avoid watering until the plants have put out some roots. Most propagation for this species is done by seed.

🪴Repot every 2-3 years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix formulated for cacti and succulents.
