This deep green to grey-brown coloured cactus is nicknamed ‘Lizard Skin’ for its rugose epidermis.

It’s described as having a depressed, globose stem covered in angular tubercles. At the tip of each tubercle there is a areole. A areole is a specialised structure in cacti and succulents from which spines, hair, flowers, etc grow. From these structures very, very small black needle like spines emerge.

Clusters of a wooly growth called cephalium grow amongst the spines from the areoles as well. There is a dense patch of this cephalium right in the centre of the plant so dense you can’t see the stem beneath it.

As this plant matures it will send out offsets, these can be used for propagating to left to for a stunning cluster. In spring and summer Copiapoa hypogea produces small, bright yellow flowers that contrast amazingly against the dark stem of this plant.

☀️This plant requires bright, indirect light but harsh direct sunlight needs to be avoided as this can scorch the leaves.

💧Overwatering can lead to rot, so it's best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

〰️These plants don’t have any special requirements when it comes to humidity. Simply remove the offsets, let them callus and then nestle the base into a well draining potting mix. Avoid watering until the plants have put out some roots.
