They are native to parts of Mexico, growing in conditions described as semi-desert in soils that are volcanic and calcareous. It is described a globular cactus that has deep, wavy ribs and on this ribs there are long, thick curved spines. These spines are thick at the base and triangular in cross section before coming to a sharp point. When they first emerge they are a bright orange-red colour and fade into a creamy white shade.
