This is a geophytic cactus, meaning it has a swollen underground root system. These plants can vary in colour from a deep green to brownish-green shade with hues of red or violet. It’s described as having a globose stem with significant chin humps. On each chin hump there are clusters of 5-8 spines emerging from small collections of woolly, fuzzy growth called a cephalium. These spines are a cream to pale-brown shade, curved and long.
