These plants can vary in colour from a deep green to brownish-green shade with hues of red or violet. It’s described as having a flattened to depressed globose stem with 10 to 15 low rounded ribs. On each rib there are clusters of 5-8 spines emerging from small collections of woolly, fuzzy growth called a cephalium. These spines curve back towards the trunk giving them a flat appearance. Structurally this plant is described as having less prominent “chin humps” compared to other gymnocalycium species.
